How is the air quality in your home?

Let’s talk about what actually contributes to the quality of the air in your home. Combustion sources from burning fuels, coal, and wood and wood pellets. Gas stoves can release carbon monoxide, formadehyde and other harmful substances. Emissions from building materials and furnishings can off gas for years!

So what else contributes to your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)?

  • Central heating and cooling systems

  • Humidification devices, mold, electronic equipment, plastics

  • Cleaning products, personal care products, perfumes & fragrances

  • Carpets, furniture, drycleaning, stain-resistant fabrics,

  • Scented candles, sealants on wood floors, pets, etc

“Americans, on average, spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, where the concentrations of some pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations.

Why does it matter?

The world is an increasingly complex place and our health is being influenced more each day by our environment. Thankfully, we know how air quality impacts our health. Poor air quality contributes to a host of conditions including:

  • Respiratory diseases, heart disease and cancer

  • Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat

  • Headaches, dizziness, fatigue

So what’s the solution?

#1 Reduce Sources of Exposure

You can’t get all the cars off the road or ground all the planes (yes, those giant combustion engines in the sky) nor get rid of all the the other industries that contribute to your local air qualilty. What you can do is reduce the sources of exposure you bring into your home.

  1. Ditch all scented cleaning and personal care products. Say “No” to fabric softeners and dryer sheets.

  2. No scented candles or air freshers

  3. Let go of perfumes and colognes (the new second hand smoke)

  4. Avoid all stain resistance furniture and carpeting (PFAS nightmare)

  5. Ensure mold and radon are not issues in your home

  6. Make sure your stove has a vent that move the air outside your home.

#2 Get a high quality air filter!
